Ann Holmes: Remember where we have been

Lest we forget - a world war was fought when Hitler instituted legal discrimination against Jews, blacks, gypsies and many others. The Jim Crow Laws legalized discrimination against blacks until 1965 and now Michelle Alexander shows us how mass incarceration continues the pattern (“The New Jim Crow,” The New Press).

HB2 legally discriminates based on sexual orientation. Seize this moment to see what could lie ahead; use the advantage of history to avoid allowing a portion of our population to be subjected to legalized discrimination again. Remember where we've been and think about where we want to go. Our most important resource is our people. Imagine what we could accomplish if we treated everyone equally and stopped passing laws to marginalize and discriminate.
