Mike Huckabee’s new children’s book, now with razor wire and a handcuffed Hispanic | Opinion

Although he’s now United States ambassador to Israel, I’m pleased to report that Mike Huckabee has hung on to his side hustle peddling children’s books to frightened MAGA parents and grandparents who used to watch his shows on right-wing TV.

It’s great he’s got a second job. I mean, seriously, what could possibly be going on in and around Israel that would require too much of his time and attention?

Today, I got an ad for the latest offering from the “Kids Guide” children’s book series that Huckabee co-founded, “the KiDS GUiDE to IMMIGRATION” (random capitalizations theirs, not mine).

So here’s the pitch from the ambassador himself, delivered in front of an appropriate backdrop of coiled razor wire, some vaguely threatening silhouettes of dark people and stripes from an American flag:

“The Kids Guide to Immigration helps kids understand how our incredible nation was built on the backs of legal immigrants and how illegal immigration and loose border policies contribute to a host of problems including illegal drugs, violent crime, loss of jobs, and higher taxes, to name a few.”

“Help your kids learn why we must protect our borders from illegal immigrants with this important *Free* Gift Bundle.”

There’s a good reason why the word “free” is surrounded by asterisks. We’ll get to that in a minute.

Hispanic man in handcuffs

In August of last year, I wrote about Huckabee’s “the KiDS GUiDE to President Trump, a very weird book celebrating Trump shaking hands with mass murderer and “Supreme Leader” of North Korea Kim Jong Un, and urging elementary school children to “Get Congress to approve death penalty for drug smugglers and human traffickers.”

For certain, “the KiDS GUiDE to IMMIGRATION” is a worthy successor.

“If someone doesn’t have the skills to get a job or is a criminal, for example, they might not be allowed into the United States,” says a sample page from the book, artistically illustrated with a tight shot of a Hispanic man’s hands cuffed behind his back.

“Not everyone follows these immigration rules. Instead of waiting for their turn, some people try to sneak into America by illegally crossing the border,” the book continues. “Other people come to the U.S. legally, but don’t follow the legal process to become a naturalized citizen. Either way, this is breaking the law.”

That’s the first time I’ve ever heard that legal immigrants not applying for citizenship is a crime. And pro tip: The Hispanic guy in the butt picture would probably have mad job skills without the handcuffs.

Then there’s this, labeled “FACT” (in all capital letters, so you know it’s true): “Some people may say ‘undocumented immigration’ instead of ‘illegal immigration.’ This is a form of political correctness because it avoids calling illegal immigration a crime.”

That’s a public service. What second grader doesn’t need to be warned about the dangers of “political correctness?”

People born here are citizens? Who knew?

I hate to have to be the one to snitch on Huckabee, former governor of the nearby state of Arkansas and the overwhelming crowd favorite among Kansas Republicans when he ran for president.

But I’m afraid this book could get him in hot water with his boss.

”A person who is born in the United States is automatically a citizen at birth,” the book says. “The 14th Amendment to the Constitution gives citizenship to anyone who is born in the United States. It was originally passed in 1868 to make sure that former slaves freed after the Civil War became citizens, but it applies to everyone who’s born in America, even if their parents aren’t citizens. Once someone is a citizen, their citizenship can never be taken away.”

That’s in direct conflict with Trump’s executive order 4160, signed Jan. 20 to end birthright citizenship, that clearly states “the privilege of United States citizenship does not automatically extend to persons born in the United States.”

And as for taking away citizens’ citizenship, Trump’s got that covered. Just last week, I reported on “Operation Second Look,” a $200 million federal task force he created to look for ways to denaturalize as many non-white immigrant citizens as possible — and which his top immigration adviser, Stephen Miller, has promised to “turbocharge” going forward.

So, if you’re the type of parent or grandparent worried that special child in your life is not getting enough anti-immigration indoctrinization in their “government school,” then “the KiDS GUiDE to IMMIGRATION” can be yours for *free*, only $1 for shipping and processing.

“Plus,” the ad says, “as part of this special offer, your kids can look forward to a new Kids Guide covering an important topic for kids every 3-4 weeks, including an accompanying streaming video lesson and digital workbook, all for just $21.90. Plus, we’ll send your kids a new issue of EverBright Kids Magazine and Activity Book each month for only $7.95.”

If you buy this, I can truly say you will get what you deserve.
