Western North Carolina under a heat advisory until Thursday evening, says the NWS

The NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC released a heat advisory at 2:23 a.m. on Thursday valid between noon and 8 p.m. The advisory is for Greater Caldwell, Greater Burke, Eastern McDowell, Greater Rutherford and Eastern Polk as well as Alexander and Cleveland counties.

The NWS informs, "Heat index values up to 107 degrees expected."

"Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses," explains the NWS.

This advisory is in effect until 8 p.m.

During heat waves, consider the following tips from the NWS

• Stay hydrated: Remember to drink plenty of fluids.
• Seek cool shelter: Opt for an air-conditioned room to stay comfortable.
• Stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
• Child and pet welfare: Never forget to safeguard young children and pets by not leaving them unattended in vehicles, especially during scorching weather when car interiors can become life-threateningly hot.
• Be mindful outdoors: Take extra precautions when working or spending time outside.
• Consider the timing: When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
• Recognize warning signs: Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
• Stay cool with clothing: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. In an emergency, call 911.
