A weather alert was issued by the NWS Newport/Morehead City NC on Sunday at 7:12 p.m. for fire danger until Monday at 5 a.m. The alert is for Mainland Dare, Mainland Hyde, Northern Craven, Southern Craven, West Carteret, East Carteret, Inland Onslow, Coastal Onslow, Northern Outer Banks, Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island as well as Martin, Pitt, Washington, Tyrrell, Greene, Beaufort, Duplin, Lenoir, Jones and Pamlico counties.

"The combination of dry fuels, gusty west to northwest winds, and low relative humidity will lead to an increased risk of wildfires Monday afternoon. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. A statewide burn ban issued by the North Carolina Forest Service is currently in place. Open burning of any kind is illegal," says the NWS.

This alert is in effect until Monday at 5 a.m.
