Best sandwich shop? Two SC restaurants rank among the nation’s favorites
Two South Carolina restaurants serve up sandwiches — and fans can’t stop craving them.
So much so, the restaurants rank among the nation’s best places to grab the lunchtime classic, according to results published Tuesday, July 29.
Voila French Cafe in Greer joins Poppyseed Kitchen in Fort Mill on a list of the top 100 sandwich shops in the United States.
To create the list, the review website Yelp said it studied sandwich joints across the country. It considered several factors, including the “total volume and ratings of reviews” that customers left over time.
“Yelpers love all the new house-made aiolis, chutneys, pâtés, and sauces these chefs are adding to their creations,” the website wrote in its report. “Diners also give high praise to unique, delicious toppings like pickled vegetables and olive tapenade, as well as the artisanal breads like fresh ciabatta, garlic bread, or pretzel buns.”
Why fans love the SC sandwich shops
Of the two South Carolina restaurants that landed on the national list, Voila French Cafe ranked the highest at No. 43. While the restaurant serves European-inspired fare, there’s also a “Not so French” section of the menu, which includes grilled cheese and BLT sandwiches.
On Yelp, customers raved about dishes that ranged from quiche to croque monsieur, a sandwich made with ham, cheese and bechamel sauce. Many also praised the customer service and welcoming atmosphere at the restaurant in Greer, a roughly 15-mile drive northeast from downtown Greenville.
Also ranking as a fan-favorite sandwich shop was Poppyseed Kitchen, which took the No. 58 spot. The restaurant in Fort Mill — a roughly 20-mile drive southwest from uptown Charlotte, North Carolina — got its start in 2022.
On Yelp, fans said they loved the taste of the fried chicken sandwich and The French American, a croissant topped with eggs, bacon, cheese and sauce. Some customers also couldn’t get enough of the stuffed French toast at the restaurant, which is open for breakfast and lunch, according to its website.
Though Voila French Cafe and Poppyseed Kitchen received honors, they missed out on a similar list last year. Instead, Cold Shoulder Gourmet in the popular tourist destination of Charleston ranked as South Carolina’s No. 1 sandwich shop, results show.
On the latest list, Yelp said the nation’s best place to eat a sandwich was Franky’s Deli Warehouse in Hialeah, Florida, near Miami.
