A driver hit a schoolmate during dismissal outside a South Carolina high school, officials said.

The student pedestrian was flown to a hospital after the crash on Tuesday, April 18, according to the Pickens Police Department.

The crash was reported at Pickens High School, roughly 20 miles west of Greenville. The pedestrian was struck while walking near a campus entrance to U.S. Highway 178, police told McClatchy News in an email.

“The Pickens Police Department and emergency medical teams arrived and assisted the individual hit by the vehicle,” the School District of Pickens County wrote in an email to McClatchy News. “The student is being transported for further medical attention for injuries. We are thankful for the prompt response of law enforcement.”

The pedestrian — who attends Pickens High School — was injured but conscious after the crash. The driver, another student at the school, wasn’t hurt, police said.

As of April 19, charges hadn’t been filed, and an investigation into the crash was ongoing, according to officers.
