Update: On April 13, the Charleston County Coroner’s Office in a news release identified the deceased man as Camerino Jesus Reyes Reyes. Officials said the boating incident happened in a lake. The original story is below.

A man vanished in the water after the paddle boat that he was in flipped in South Carolina, officials said.

Two others were rescued with a rope after they were found lying on the overturned boat on Sunday, April 10. The men told first responders they had been riding in the boat with a 39-year-old man when it “capsized,” according to the North Charleston Police Department.

“He could not swim and they did not see him again,” an officer wrote in an incident report.

Roughly two hours after North Charleston officers responded to the scene, divers found the 39-year-old dead and pulled his body to shore. The incident was listed in the police report as a possible drowning.

The deceased man wasn’t identified in the redacted report, and the Charleston County Coroner’s Office didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ requests for additional information on April 12.

Police said the incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. April 10 near Midland Park Road, roughly 15 miles northwest of Charleston.

The two who were rescued reportedly told “officers through a translator, that they were drinking on the paddle boat.”
