A driver hit and killed a tow truck operator — and kept traveling on Interstate 95 in South Carolina, officials said.

Now, state troopers are searching for the person responsible for the hit-and-run crash they say happened along the major East Coast thoroughfare late Sunday, Nov. 7.

The tow truck driver reportedly got out to help a disabled car along the interstate. At about 11:30 p.m., officials said another vehicle hit the tow truck driver and the parked wrecker but didn’t stop.

The tow truck driver died from crash-related injuries, Cpl. Matt Southern of the S.C. Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Officials are now seeking clues in the deadly wreck, which was reported in the northbound lanes around mile marker 197. The area is in Dillon County, roughly 65 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach.

Highway patrol said the suspect vehicle is a Volvo VNL from model years 2004 to 2007. The truck is white but could have been green in the past, according to cops.

“The vehicle should have damage on the front right corner (passenger side) and be missing the headlight, portions of the fiberglass hood, and the intake grille,” state troopers said in an updated news release.

Officials urge anyone with information to call highway patrol at 843-661-4705 or 800-768-1505. CrimeStoppers can also be reached at 888-274-6372.

State troopers in their news releases didn’t identify the tow truck driver, and a Dillon County coroner’s office representative didn’t immediately share the person’s name with McClatchy News on Tuesday, Nov. 9.
