Student’s note alerts teacher to gun, bullets in middle schooler’s locker, SC cops say
A South Carolina middle school student was caught with a gun in his locker on Wednesday, police say.
Police say another student at Haut Gap Middle School on Johns Island gave a teacher a note saying that the 13-year-old “said he was going to shoot us” and had a gun and bullets in his backpack, WCSC reported.
The student’s locker was searched and police say a handgun and 16 bullets were found inside the student’s backpack, according to WCBD.
The gun was not loaded, WCIV reported.
The Charleston Police Department responded to the school, and the student told officers he took the gun from his cousin’s room and wanted to show his friends, WCIV reported.
He was charged and taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice, according to WCSC.
Charleston County school officials said in a statement to WCBD that an investigation determined there wasn’t an ongoing threat to the school.
“We are thankful our students and staff members at Haut Gap Middle School followed through on the request we make that if you see something, say something,” the statement said, according to WCBD.
