71-year-old man climbs out of stalled car and gets hit by passing SUV, SC cops say

A South Carolina man was hit and killed Thursday after his car stalled, officials say.

The man had gotten out of his stalled car on Todd Quarter Road in Waterloo at about 6:40 a.m., according to South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Gary Miller.

A Chevrolet Tahoe came around the curve, and the driver tried to avoid hitting the stalled car, Miller says.

The 53-year-old driver then hit the man, who was trying to cross the northbound lane, Miller says. The man died at the scene.

The Laurens County Coroner’s Office identified him as 71-year-old Joseph John Gargano, WYFF reported.

Officials are continuing to investigate, according to WSPA.

No other information has been released.
