Man fixing truck on side of interstate struck and killed by DUI driver, SC cops say
A driver police say was under the influence hit and killed a man tending to a broken down truck on the side of the road in South Carolina, media outlets report.
Richard Caldwell, 51, was a passenger in a 2000 Dodge pickup truck that officials say broke down on the side of I-85 Tuesday night in Greenville County, according to WYFF.
He had just finished loading the truck onto “tow dollies” and was about to get into the SUV pulling the dolly when officials say he was hit by a Jeep driven by an impaired driver, WYFF reported.
Caldwell died at the scene, according to the Greenville News.
The driver, 34-year-old, Irakli Samkharadze also struck the broken down truck and the SUV, WSPA reported, but wasn’t injured.
He was arrested Wednesday and charged with driving under the influence with fatality, according to arrest records.
His bond has not been set.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating, according to the Greenville News.
