Woman 7-months pregnant loses baby when she is accidentally shot, NC police say
An unborn child was fatally shot when a gun fired by accident during a family dispute, according to police in North Carolina.
The shooting happened around 3 a.m. Sunday in Mint Hill, and the woman’s 41-year-old husband has been arrested in connection with the incident, an April 12 Magistrate’s Order reports.
Mint Hill police say they learned of the shooting when the woman was dropped off at a hospital.
“After speaking with family members, MHPD were notified that Luis Marcano-Marcano was the husband who dropped his wife, Sabrina Campos, off at the hospital,” the affidavit says.
“He said there was an argument between them two, and he retrieved the pistol and admitted to shooting the ground next to her feet. He said he then placed the pistol on the rail of the back porch, and Sabrina then grabbed the pistol and tried to put it in her pocket and pulled the trigger, shooting herself in the stomach.”
Marcano-Marcano said he left his wife alone at the hospital so he could hide the pistol by throwing it “into the woods at an unknown location,” police said.
Campos confirmed the shooting scenario and said “she went to grab the pistol because Luis had been drinking and (she) did not want him to get in trouble for shooting more,” the affidavit says.
He has been charged with misdemeanor discharge of a firearm in the city, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on him for pending deportation, according to court documents.
Mint Hill is about a 15-mile drive southeast from downtown Charlotte.
