IRS Direct File is gone in 2026. A list of free alternatives for NC filers
With tax season underway, North Carolina filers have lost one tool to complete their returns for free.
The IRS Direct File system, a government-run tool that let some Americans file their federal taxes directly and for free, won’t be offered for the 2026 filing season, The Associated Press reported.
However, there are some free tax filing software and services you can use to prepare and file your return, many through the IRS Free File program. These programs are usually available for taxpayers under a certain adjusted gross income (AGI).
Here’s what you need to know.

How do I find my AGI?
Your AGI is listed directly on your federal tax return from last year. On a 2024 Form 1040, it appears on Line 11.
If you don’t have a copy of your return, you can find your AGI by logging into your IRS account or requesting a transcript.
How to navigate IRS Free File
Here’s how to navigate the IRS Free File site:
- Go to IRS.gov/FreeFile: you must start there to qualify for IRS Free File.
- Choose Guided Tax Software (income limits apply).
- Select a partner using the finder or browse list. The IRS will send you to that site to create an account.
- Prepare and e-file your return, then watch for an email confirming the IRS accepted it. You can fix and resubmit if it’s rejected.
NC tax refunds
Most tax refunds arrive in under 21 days after the IRS approves your return. If you file electronically, you can start tracking your refund within 24 hours using the IRS2Go app or the “Where’s My Refund?” tool.
The fastest way to get your money is to file online and choose direct deposit, which lets the IRS send your refund straight to your bank account.
Delays can happen if a return is mailed, contains errors, is flagged for fraud or needs extra review. In those cases, the IRS will reach out by mail if more information is needed.
