Man accused of making unusual bribe to avoid arrest, NC cops say. It ended badly

The suspect in an assault investigation added to his legal troubles when he suggested sex as an alternative to being arrested, according to investigators in eastern North Carolina.

It happened Saturday, Dec. 27, in Pitt County and resulted in the suspect facing an additional charge of bribery, the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office reports.

The 26-year-old man was being sought on accusations of punching someone in the face “with a closed fist thereby inflicting serious injury,” court documents report.

The assault charge is a misdemeanor, jail records show. The bribery charge is a felony.

“The defendant unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did with a corrupt intent offer ... after being arrested stated: ‘If you drop me off I will let you have sex with me,’” a magistrate’s order reports.

Investigators say the offer was an attempt to influence the deputy into releasing the suspect. The deputy’s response was not released.

Bribery is a Class F felony and penalties can include 10 to 41 months in jail, as well as fines, legal experts say. The suspect’s bond was set at $10,000 for the bribery charge and $3,500 for the assault charge, jail records show.

Pitt County is about a 250-mile drive northeast from uptown Charlotte.
