Charlotte driver accused of ramming Border Patrol agents at gas station, DHS says

A second Charlotte motorist has been accused of assaulting Border Patrol agents, after two vehicles collided in a gas station parking lot, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Homeland Security officials report the latest incident occurred Monday, Nov. 17, as agents were gathering for an ongoing immigration operation in Charlotte.

“Border Patrol agents in Charlotte faced another vehicle ramming while in a parking lot,” DHS officials reported in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

“Agents were preparing for an operation, when a car jumped a curb to enter the parking lot and sped toward agents. The driver was warned to stop and back up. The driver then drove the vehicle toward the exit of the parking lot and waited to try and box in Border Patrol. As agents went to confront the driver, the car rammed a law enforcement vehicle and fled the scene.”

A car chase followed, resulting in the suspect entering a cul-de-sac where an arrest was made, officials said.

The suspect’s identity and details of charges have not been released.

The arrest came one day after a U.S. citizen was accused of “weaponized his vehicle” against federal agents in the University City area, according to a Homeland Security social media post. The driver was identified as Miguel Angel Garcia Martinez, and he is charged with felony assault, resisting arrest and impeding a federal officer, WSOC reports.

There have been 71 “vehicular attacks” against CBP agents since January 20, a 58% increase over the previous year, DHS reported in a news release. “There have been 28 vehicular attacks against ICE since January 20, compared to just two such incidents in the same period of 2024,” officials said.

Charlotte has been the target of an ongoing immigration operation, aimed at people accused of being in the country illegally, DHS says.

“During the first two days of Operation Charlotte’s Web, Border Patrol arrested over 130 (suspects) who have all broken the immigration laws of our country,“ DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a news release.

“Criminal records of those arrested include known gang membership, aggravated assault, possession of a dangerous weapon, felony larceny, simple assault, hit and run, possession of stolen goods, shoplifting, DUI, DWI, and illegal re-entry after prior deportation, a felony.”

The operation has ignited protests of DHS tactics, sparked condemnation by some local government leaders and resulted in some businesses catering to immigrant to close out of concern for their customers.
