To say Lake Lure has seen better summer days would be an understatement, a year after Hurricane Helene damaged the lake known for its “Dirty Dancing” fame.
But after a massive post-storm cleanup on a partially drained lake bed, the promise of better days is ahead: The Western North Carolina Town of Lake Lure has announced a timeline for the complete restoration and reopening of the lake.
Here’s what to expect and when:
- Oct. 31: Target date to complete the restoration of the lake’s basin and shoreline. This is a soft target and could change based on any upcoming weather and other factors, a release from the town stated.
- May 1, 2026: Target date to have lake fully refilled and reopened to the public.
- Summer 2026: Reopening of the building at Lake Lure Beach (details below ⬇️).
“Reopening Lake Lure will be more than a return to normal — it will be a symbol of resilience, unity, and the incredible power of partnership,” Mayor Carol Pritchett said in the statement. “This achievement will help drive the full recovery of Lake Lure and the greater Hickory Nut Gorge region.”
The town worked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, along with AshBritt Environmental and several local contractors, to repair the lake after the hurricane damaged it.
Lake Lure’s history
The lake opened in 1927 and is about 800 acres.
Below the water’s surface is remnants of an 1800s Gold Rush town, Buffalo. Most of the buildings were removed before the creation of the lake, yet a schoolhouse and other buildings remain under the water. After Hurricane Helene, water levels were dropped to their lowest in over a century. Interesting relics were then revealed, including what’s believed to be a Ford Model T and concrete steps that led to nowhere, The Charlotte Observer previously reported.
Lake Lure’s ‘Dirty Dancing’ fame
In the now-iconic scene of 1987’s ”Dirty Dancing” movie, Patrick Swayze lifted Jennifer Grey out of the lake’s water. The town has hosted a Lake Lure Dance Festival, which includes music, dancing and — of course — a “lake lift” competition.
Some of the movie’s scenes were also filmed at the Lake Lure Inn and Spa, where many of the cast members stayed during filming. The Inn reopened in October but the spa remains closed, according to the website.
Bald Mountain Golf Course at Rumbling Bald in Lake Lure was also featured in “Dirty Dancing”. Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure officially reopened in November after storm cleanup.
About Flowering Bridge and Rainbow Bridge at Lake Lure
The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge opened as a walking bridge in 2013, a picturesque attraction covered in shrubs and flowers. It served as a spot for marriage proposals, and it included a Rainbow Bridge section that was a memorial for pets who had passed on.
The hurricane sadly destroyed the Flowering Bridge beyond repair, the town recently announced.
The volunteers who created the Flowering Bridge had stated plans to design new gardens, including a new Rainbow Bridge. And just this week, it was announced that more than $2.5 million of federal funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will be used toward rebuild the Flowering Bridge.
About Lake Lure Beach
Lake Lure Beach is one of the area’s most popular spots, featuring 100 yards of a sandy beach, a water park with water slides and water games and a picnic area.
The Lake Lure Beach Building had some damage to its water lines during the storm. A plan is in place to restore those water lines, the town has stated, and the building will be cleaned and reopened for summer 2026 season.
