“The Runarounds follows a group of recent high school graduates from Wilmington, North Carolina, who come together the summer after graduation to form a rock band, united by their shared love of music and near-impossible dream of stardom,” a release from Prime Video says.

“Over the course of one unforgettable summer, they throw themselves into the pursuit of their big break—falling in love, getting into trouble, and building the kind of bonds that feel like family along the way. With original music, romantic entanglements, and the raw highs and lows of coming-of-age, The Runarounds captures the rush of risking everything at the edge of adulthood to chase your dreams.”

The music drama series is one of many new shows that have been filmed in North Carolina this year, specifically in the Wilmington area, along with “The Waterfront” and “The Summer I Turned Pretty.”

‘The Runarounds’ plot

Inspired by the real band of the same name, the new music drama series stars real-life musicians William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Jeremy Yun, Zendé Murdock, and Jesse Golliher. Other co-stars include Lilah Pate, Maximo Salas, Kelley Pereira, Marley Aliah, Mark Wystrach, Brooklyn Decker, Hayes MacArthur, and Shea Pritchard.

Fun fact: Creator Jonas Pate, a Winston-Salem native, originally held auditions to put together a band to perform on an episode of “Outer Banks,” as previously reported by UNC Media Hub in The News & Observer. The concept developed into an entirely new show that ultimately became “The Runarounds.”

“They’ve gotten so at ease, even though they weren’t actors before this… because when we shoot the musical scenes, we just want people to realize that, no, this is this band. This is who’s playing,” Pate said previously in a 2024 interview.

“I love watching young people pursue things that they want to achieve.”

Jonas Pate, behind the “Outer Banks” TV series, has made filming his new series, “The Runarounds,” a family affair. His daughter, Lilah Pate, stars in the upcoming Amazon Prime show as one of the leads, and his wife is a co-producer.
