A teenage girl was run over by a truck in an unexpected place — along a popular beach in the middle of the afternoon, according to investigators in North Carolina.

It happened just after 2 p.m. Monday, July 14, on Oak Island, a barrier island about a 160-mile drive southeast from Raleigh.

“Upon arriving, officers with the Oak Island Police Department learned a vehicle performing survey work had run over the legs of a 15-year-old female who had been lying on the beach,” police said in a news release.

“The teenager was evaluated on scene for possible non-life threatening injuries, and out of caution was later transported to Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center in Bolivia for further evaluation.”

Her identity has not been released and police did not say if the driver faces charges.

The GMC pickup is owned by TI Coastal Services, “a private contractor conducting survey work in advance of a beach nourishment project,” police said.

The survey began July 7 and is scheduled to continue through mid-July, officials said. An engineering firm intends to use the survey to replenish the beach with sand this year, officials said.

“It has been erroneously reported on social media and other platforms that this accident was caused by the Town’s Beach Safety Unit during its regular patrols. This information is false,” town officials said.

“Claims such as this can quickly cause the spread of misinformation, and lead to a dangerous lack of trust in first responders.”
