104 North Carolina deaths are attributed to Helene. Here’s a list of their names
More than three months after the remnants of Hurricane Helene devastated parts of Western North Carolina, the state’s Department of Health and Human Services has released the names of those who were killed by the storm.
According to a list provided by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to The News & Observer after a records request, there are 104 deaths attributed to Helene.
DHHS spokesperson Kelly Haight Connor said in an email the list would be updated if more deaths are verified as storm deaths.
Blue Ridge Public Radio, which also obtained the list and reported on it earlier Monday, reported in November that DHHS had initially declined to release information about Helene fatalities beyond a count. DHHS, which oversees the state’s Medical Examiner’s office, said at the time that investigations were still underway and that it wanted to respect the privacy of the families and loved ones, Blue Ridge Public Radio reported.
The list of names does not include where each person lived or their ages.
