If you’re looking to settle down in North Carolina, a new report recently named the town where your dollar will stretch the farthest.

GOBankingRates, a personal finance website, released a list of the best cities to live comfortably on a $100,000 salary in each state using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and several other sources.

For the report, GOBankingRates’ team rankings were compiled based on the 50/30/20 rule, “which dictates that no more than 50% of income should be allocated to necessities.”

Based on median household incomes, total annual cost of necessities and other factors, Black Mountain was named the best city to live comfortably in North Carolina:

  • Livability score: 85

  • Median income: $75,310

  • Total annual necessities cost: $48,757

The town, located in Buncombe County, is about 15 miles outside of Asheville.

Black Mountain— which was named for the range of mountains bordering the town to the north— was founded in 1893, according to the town website. Since then, it has long been a popular destination in the western part of the state.

How to help Black Mountain after Hurricane Helene

Unfortunately, Black Mountain was one of many towns heavily impacted after Hurricane Helene swept through as a tropical storm.

Even weeks after the storm’s hit in late September, cleanup and recovery efforts are still underway with storm debris removal and on-the-ground support for victims in need.

Still, many parks and locally owned businesses have reopened, according to the town’s tourism website.
