A “loving” mama cat waited as her six kittens got new homes — and now, she needs one of her own.

“I’ll probably be very shy in the shelter, and that may cause me to get overlooked,” a North Carolina shelter said in an Aug. 28 Facebook post written from the perspective of Chamomile the cat. “But if someone is willing to be patient with me, and give me lots of time to feel safe and sound in my new environment, they will see that they have a purring, cuddly, lap cat, who will be their friend for life!”

Chamomile is up for adoption after getting a “rough start” to life. When she and her kittens arrived as strays in June, they were sick with an upper respiratory infection, the Asheville Humane Society wrote online and in an email to McClatchy News.

“For the first few weeks in my foster home, I would hide most of the time, but come out for pets and treats whenever someone opened a can of wet food,” the shelter wrote. “After a few more weeks, I started to hang around longer and longer.”

Chamomile eventually warmed up to her foster parents and basked in their chin scratches. She’s described as a 1-year-old cat with a curious nature and “the most beautiful eyes.”

“I really enjoy playing with my kittens, because really I am still a kitten myself,” the shelter wrote. “Now that my babies are going to their forever homes, I am ready to be someone’s special baby!”

Like Chamomile, her kittens have tea-related names: Chai, Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Ginger, Hibiscus and Oolong. All six of the babies got new owners.

But as of Sept. 3, their mom still waited her turn at the shelter in the North Carolina mountains. Though Chamomile can be timid at first, the humane society said she’s “worth the effort.”

More details about the animal organization’s adoption process can be found at ashevillehumane.org.
