A North Carolina driver walked outside her office and got a slithering surprise, news outlets report.

Kathy Whitt told WGHP she saw a snake dangling under her car and called animal control officers. She watched as they wrangled the 9-foot reptile, which had made its way into the engine compartment.

“They were so brave ‘cause they were like under there and they got a hold of it,” Whitt told the TV station. “And it took ‘em a while I guess to untangle the snake from underneath the car. So, they eventually pulled it out.”

The Greensboro Police Department said its officers responded Aug. 2 after receiving a report of a snake “preventing the driver from entering a vehicle.” A photo shared online shows the massive creature made it to safety with the help of workers from Guilford County Animal Control.

“A very slippery situation, indeed,” police wrote in a Facebook post.

The snake was a non-venomous Burmese python, which can grow to about 16 feet, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History. Officials believe the unusual discovery was someone’s lost pet, WFMY reported.

“It’s definitely the biggest snake call we’ve had,” Ashley Knox, an Animal Control officer, told the TV station. “We get a lot of snake calls. None that are 8 to 10 feet, especially not in a parking lot in front of a business. It was new to us.”

Guilford County Animal Services said in an Aug. 2 social media post the snake went into a foster home as it waited to be reunited with its owner.

A Greensboro police spokesperson referred McClatchy News’ questions to Animal Control, which didn’t immediately share additional information on Aug. 5.
