The Italian restaurant chain known for family-sized entrees and a spinning Pope Table has filed for bankruptcy and closed its only Carolina location.

Buca di Beppo at Carolina Place Parkway in Pineville, near Carolina Place mall, is among a dozen restaurants across the country that abruptly closed last week.

On Sunday, the Orlando, Florida, restaurant filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Texas.

The company has $0 to $50,000 in assets and owes $15 million to $50 million to at least 30 creditors, court filings show.

“While the restaurant industry has faced significant challenges, this move is the best next step for our brand,” Buca di Beppo president Rich Saultz said in a statement.

Buca di Beppo serves family-style portions for sharing with classic Italian meals like chicken parmesan, lasagna, and spaghetti with giant meatballs.

The Pineville restaurant opened 21 years ago, according to Buca di Beppo.

Founded in 1993, Buca di Beppo still operates 44 locations in 14 states. The closest location to Charlotte is now 425 miles away near Nashville, Tennessee.
