Boy riding bike falls into chest-deep mud and gets stuck for hours, NC officials say
A 12-year-old riding his bike fell into chest-deep mud and got stuck for hours in North Carolina, officials said.
The boy was trapped until other children heard screams for help late Friday, Nov. 3. The kids got the attention of the boy’s mom, who called 911, rescuers told The Daily Record and ABC11, The News & Observer’s media partner.
First responders from several agencies pulled the child to safety after he got stuck in a sediment pond, a type of basin used in construction projects. The rescue was reported near a home-building site in Lillington, roughly 30 miles southwest of Raleigh.
The 12-year-old told rescuers he wasn’t injured but felt cold. He was evaluated and taken to a hospital, the Lillington Fire Department wrote in an emailed statement.
The child was rescued more than two hours after he got stuck. Though news outlets report that the boy plunged into a 5-foot sinkhole, firefighters told McClatchy News he fell into a sediment pond.
The Lillington Fire Department didn’t immediately share additional information on Nov. 7.
