Car crashes through church, all the way to altar, before evening service, NC cops say

A car crash in North Carolina sent a vehicle plowing through a church right before the beginning of an evening service, troopers and church leaders say.

The car broke through the doors of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Supply on Wednesday, Feb. 23.

“Approximately 30 minutes before people were arriving at our church tonight for Prayer Meeting, an accident occurred that sent a vehicle through our sanctuary doors all the way to the pulpit, leaving destruction in its path,” the church wrote on its Facebook page.

A car was “trying to make a left-hand turn and hit the car that ended up in the church,” State Highway Patrol officials told WECT.

The crash happened around 6:15 p.m., WECT reported, and service was set to start at 7 p.m.

Travis Greer, who has been going to the church for over a decade and who recently became a deacon, told McClatchy News he rushed over to the church after he heard about the crash.

“It was a lot worse than what I anticipated,” he said.

Troopers told WECT there was one person in each vehicle involved in the accident and “both had minor injuries.”

No one was in the church when the crash occurred, according to the church.

“We are very blessed that no one got seriously hurt,” Greer said.

Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church advised churchgoers against entering the building to look on Feb. 24 as “there are electrical outlets and wires dangling and (stripped) from the walls, and the possibility of falling ceiling tiles or glass,” the post said.

Greer said services have been relocated to a nearby building until further notice.

Supply is southeastern North Carolina, about 160 miles from Raleigh.
