UNC lifts suspension of athletics for some teams, including basketball and football
Updated Aug. 23
Several UNC-Chapel Hill athletic teams, including the basketball and football teams, will resume practice after having suspended activities due to COVID-19 concerns.
The athletic department tweeted Saturday that multiple teams — men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball — will resume athletic activities Sunday to prepare for competition. The athletic department said the football team will return to practice Monday.
The school said all other sports teams will continue to pause athletic activities for the time being.
On Wednesday, the school announced it was suspending all athletic activities until 5 p.m. Thursday due to an “upward trend in positive COVID-19 tests on campus.” The suspension was later expanded into Saturday.
The school reported two new COVID-19 clusters on Saturday, bringing the number of clusters to nine.
The coronavirus cases have caused the school to move to online classes for the rest of the fall semester.
