Driver thought to have plunged into river after I-95 crash found safe, NC cops say
A driver who was thought to have plunged into the Cape Fear River after a car crash was found safe, North Carolina officials say.
A person reported seeing one or two vehicles get into a collision before possibly careening off an Interstate 95 bridge on Thursday night, the N.C. State Highway Patrol said in a news release. The bridge spans the Cape Fear River in Cumberland County, home to Fayetteville, according to officials.
“Multiple search and rescue personnel have been canvassing the area in an attempt to locate any involved persons to no avail,” state troopers said in their news release.
Dive teams were involved in the search, which started Thursday and picked up again Friday, according to ABC11, The News & Observer’s media partner. The part of the river searched could be as deep as 19 feet, officials told the TV station.
On Sunday, Highway Patrol said in a Facebook post that the driver “believed to be associated” with the crash was found safe and that the car never went in the Cape Fear River.
State troopers say they are investigating the possible crash, which may have happened in the southbound lanes near mile marker 46. Officials ask anyone with information to call Highway Patrol at 910-486-1334.
