Man caught in rip current drowns off Outer Banks, NC police say

A 26-year-old North Carolina man died after he was caught in a rip current off the Outer Banks before dawn Friday, police said.

Kitty Hawk Police Chief Joel Johnson said officers got the call at about 3:15 a.m. after the man disappeared in the ocean.

The chief said Zacheus D. Dominetae, of Greenville, North Carolina, went into the water with a friend when they were caught by a rip current that pulled them out to sea.

“The friend lost sight of Mr. Dominetae and was able to return to shore and call for emergency assistance,” Johnson said in a Facebook post.

“After an extensive search of the area by rescue personnel, his body was discovered several hours after the incident in the area where he was last seen. We ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the chief said.

The National Weather Service said there is a moderate rip current risk for the Outer Banks during the Fourth of July weekend.
