Two die during scuba trip off coast of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, officials say

Two divers died during a scuba trip off the North Carolina coast on Sunday, officials say.

The two were on a commercial vessel about 25 miles off the coast of Cape Lookout on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, Edward Wargo, petty officer with the U.S. Coast Guard 5th district, told McClatchy News.

When the two hadn’t resurfaced for a while, a third diver was sent to check on them and found them unconscious and unresponsive, Wargo said.

They were brought aboard and given CPR but remained unconscious, he said.

The Coast Guard was then informed of what happened and the charter boat went to the station at Fort Macon, where it was met by EMS, according to Wargo.

Fort Macon is in Beaufort, which is about 35 miles from Cape Lookout.

No other information, including the cause of death or details about the two divers, was available.
