A grandpa’s advice on North Carolina lottery pays off big time for his granddaughter

A North Carolina grandpa’s advice paid off big time for his granddaughter.

Kaitlen Raney was visiting her grandfather in Mebane from Virginia last weekend, and the two went to buy a lottery ticket together on Saturday, according to a release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.

Raney told lottery officials she usually buys $1 scratch-off tickets, but her grandpa suggested she take a chance at a bigger prize with a more expensive ticket.

So she bought a Ruby Red 7’s scratch-off ticket for $20 instead, the release says.

They scratched the ticket later and found Raney had won a $100,000 prize thanks to her grandfather’s advice.

“Maybe he’s not so crazy for playing the lottery after all,” Raney told lottery officials. “I guess I owe him dinner. Good job, granddad.”

She claimed her prize Wednesday and took home $70,756 after taxes, according to the lottery.

She told lottery officials she plans to start a college fund for her son and save for a house with the money.

The game Raney won launched in January with four prizes of $4 million and eight prizes of $100,000. Three of the $4 million still remain and, after Raney’s win, six $100,000 prizes are left.
