Woman doused in flammable liquid and set on fire as she sat in stopped car, NC cops say
A woman was severely burned after being set on fire while sitting in a car on Monday in North Carolina, police say.
A passerby got the attention of a police officer at an intersection in Kinston, where a 24-year-old woman was on the sidewalk with severe burns on her upper body, according to a release from the Kinston Police Department.
The woman was driving when a man she didn’t know walked up to the car while she was stopped, police say.
The man then doused her in a “flammable liquid” and set her on fire, according to police.
Fire officials and EMS responded and helped the victim, police say. She was taken to a local hospital and later flown to North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill.
Police are investigating and say the suspect is described as a black man between 20 and 30 years old.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Kinston Police Department’s tip line at 252-939-4020 or Lenoir County Crime Stoppers at 252-523-4444, police say.
Kinston is in eastern North Carolina about 82 miles from Raleigh.
