Bear cub feet away from NC school sent mom ‘running, heels and all,’ she says

A North Carolina mom spotted a bear outside a school, and it sent her “running, heels and all,” she says.

Alendeyia Renae Brown and her son were leaving Jones Senior High School when they saw the cub just feet away from the door on Wednesday, she wrote in a message to McClatchy News.

Her first thought: “Son, let’s go.”

So, the two took off running, said Brown, who figured the momma bear was nearby.

From a car, her Facebook live video captured the moments the curious cub came toward the school’s windows and jumped onto an outdoor bench.

But it seems the baby bear was ready to skip class.

The animal, which weighed about 75 pounds, eventually scurried away from the building, video shows.

It happened in Trenton, an Eastern North Carolina town roughly 20 miles west of New Bern.

The cub was likely a black bear, the only species that lives in the state, and are “very common” near the mountains and coast, wildlife officials say.

On average, the animals grow up to 700 pounds and live about four to five years, according to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. Babies tend to stay near their mothers “through their first winter” the commission says.
