5 North Carolina hospitals rank among best in the country, watchdog group says

Several North Carolina hospitals earned spots on a list of the country’s top medical centers.

The five hospitals ranked among the 120 best in the United States, according to results released Tuesday from The Leapfrog Group, a health safety watchdog.

The top teaching hospitals on the list:

  • Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center
  • UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh

The top general hospitals on the list:

  • Novant Health Matthews Medical Center

  • Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center in Bolivia
  • Novant Health Medical Park Hospital in Winston-Salem

All the medical centers received A grades in the fall 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade rankings, results show.

Leapfrog says it came up with the top hospital list after evaluating medical facilities’ performance on a survey.

“Top Hospitals have better systems in place to prevent medication errors, higher quality on maternity care and lower infection rates, among other laudable qualities,” the nonprofit says.

The group says less than 6 percent of eligible medical centers make its top hospital list, which is divided into the categories of teaching, general, children’s and rural hospitals.

The hospital in Matthews, a Charlotte suburb, earned a top ranking for the second year in a row, according to The Leapfrog Group.

The state with the most hospitals in the rankings was Florida, with 21.
