16-year-old girl accused of killing her parents and grandmother, NC sheriff says
A 16-year-old girl is facing multiple first degree murder charges after three bodies were found in her family’s North Carolina home, according to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office.
Star Grant is being charged as an adult, along with 28-year-old Devan Oneal Loving, the sheriff’s office said.
The dead include Grant’s parents and grandmother, investigators say.
Deputies discovered the bodies around 7:15 p.m. Thursday, May 7, in the Fairview area, about a 120-mile drive northwest from uptown Charlotte.
“Deputies responded to a call for a welfare check at a home located at 18 Ashworth Drive in Fairview. When deputies entered, they discovered 41-year-old Travis Eugene Grant, 42-year-old Kimberly Michelle Grant, and 66-year-old Sharon Harwood Grant deceased from gunshot wounds,” the sheriff’s office said in a May 8 news release.
“Detectives discovered 16-year-old Star Grant was missing from the home and received information she may be in the area of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with Devan Loving. ... They were located in Gatlinburg shortly after 6 (Friday) morning.”
The two were “taken into custody at a hotel on Ownby Street,” WHNS reports. Gatlinburg is about a 95-mile drive northwest from Fairview, at the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Details of a motive for the killings have not been released.
“Our detectives travelled to Gatlinburg to interview the suspects. Information received during those interviews led to (the) charges,” the sheriff’s office said.
Each faces three counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony conspiracy to commit murder, officials said.
Travis Eugene Grant and Kimberly Michelle Grant were husband and wife, and Sharon Harwood Grant was Travis Grant’s mother, officials said.
The two suspects will have an extradition hearing in Tennessee before returning to Buncombe County. Investigators did not provide details of their relationship.
