A Cary man who masqueraded as an FBI agent for a bank scam was caught at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Christopher Aaron Murray faces a series of charges, including impersonating law enforcement, state officials said.

The arrest happened Sunday, and investigators did not reveal why 40-year-old Murray was at an airport.

“The scam involved a suspect contacting victims and falsely claiming their bank account had been compromised, then demanding payment to resolve the issue — a tactic commonly used in financial fraud schemes,” the N.C. SBI said in an April 26 news release.

An affidavit reports Murray posed as an FBI agent and worked with a partner who posed as a Wells Fargo bank employee. The victim lives in Jones County, and he lost $16,000, court documents say.

Murray has been charged with: felony conspiracy; felony obtaining property by false pretenses; felony exploitation of a disabled or elderly person in a position of trust and impersonating a law enforcement officer, the SBI says.

“This investigation remains ongoing, and investigators believe there may be additional victims. Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or victimized by this individual is encouraged to contact the JCSO or the SBI’s coastal district office,” the SBI said.

Jones County is about a 105-mile drive southeast from downtown Raleigh.
