Two candidates are facing off to be North Carolina’s insurance commissioner in the Nov. 5 election.

The current commissioner, Mike Causey, a Republican seeking his third term in office, is running against Democratic state Sen. Natasha Marcus.

Responsible for regulating the insurance industry, the North Carolina insurance commissioner negotiates rates, investigates fraud and licenses bail bond agents.

The state’s insurance commissioner also used to hold the role of state fire marshal, but that was changed by lawmakers last year — a move Causey strongly opposed.

Marcus and Causey faced off in a candidate forum earlier this month that focused on recovery from Hurricane Helene, increases to insurance rates and transparency within the office.
