Under the Dome podcast: Previewing the NC short session with WUNC’s Colin Campbell
Start your week in North Carolina politics with our latest Under the Dome podcast, for the week of March 18, 2024. Dawn Vaughan here, your podcast host and Capitol bureau chief. I’m joined by my Capitol bureau chief counterpart Colin Campbell, who holds the same position at WUNC.
We are about a month out from the start of the legislative short session. That’s the one always held during an election year, which changes the tone of the entire session. First, it’s usually shorter — not just by design and due to the work involved, including a budget adjustment bill, but also because lawmakers want to have time to campaign.
And the results of the primary earlier this month change that up.
Case in point, House Speaker Tim Moore, who’s a short-timer now. He’s heading to Congress, assuming he wins his Republican-favored U.S. House district. During the first half of the podcast, we talk about the Republican dynamics that may play out this year, including between Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger, who is not leaving the legislature.
Headliner of the Week
After the break, we talk about the Democrats whose primary drama is still unsettled, and what that could mean for the session.
Stay tuned to the end for our picks for Headliner of the Week. Mine is about this dismal — for me as a Virginia Tech and Duke fan — ACC men’s basketball tournament. And Campbell’s is about a Libertarian in Tyrrell County.
