Check the schedule. Some NC schools are closed or opening on a delay on Election Day.

Some Triangle school systems will close Tuesday or open on a two-day delay because of Election Day.

The Wake County school system and Durham Public Schools will both operate on a two-hour delay on Tuesday. The Chatham County and Chapel Hill-Carrboro school systems will both be closed for classes Tuesday because it’s a teacher workday.

The Johnston County and Orange County school systems are both operating on a normal schedule Tuesday.

The reason some districts are making Election Day changes is that many schools serve as polling sites, and traffic is expected to be heavier than normal in the morning. In Wake, 68 schools serve as polling sites, and 21 Durham schools are polling places.

Turnout could be higher than normal for this year’s mid-term election. In addition to congressional races, state legislative races, state judicial races and proposed amendments to the state constitution are on the ballot. There are also countywide races and county bond referenda on Tuesday’s ballot.
