Donald Trump Ally Masterminds Toppling of Romanian Government

A MAGA-aligned opposition leader successfully led a collapse of Romania's pro-European coalition on Tuesday after lawmakers voted in favor of a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.

George Simion posted on X that it is “time for national reconciliation” after the result, which was announced last week, when the leftist Social Democratic Party (PSD) withdrew from government and joined forces with his hard-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) to submit a motion to Parliament.

The result has triggered a fresh period of turmoil in the European Union country, less than a year after the coalition was sworn in.

Simion, who lost Romania’s presidential race last year, has a healthy lead in the polls and called for snap elections during Tuesday’s parliamentary debate, according to Politico. He is seen as closely aligned with U.S. President Donald Trump and traveled to Washington, D.C., last year for Trump’s inauguration.
