A boater needed a rescue after he was stranded on an iceberg in a New Zealand lake, officials told media outlets.

The man was in an inflatable boat on Tasman Lake on the evening of June 23, police told the Otago Daily Times. His boat became damaged, prompting him to seek refuge on an iceberg, officials said.

While stranded on the iceberg, the hiker “managed to call for help on his phone,” reported Stuff, a New Zealand news outlet. The man waited for rescuers in “freezing temperatures,” the outlet reported.

Rescuers reached the man and brought him to safety a few hours later, officials told 1 News.

“Other than being cold, the man does not appear to have any injuries,” police told the Otago Daily Times.

Winter in the Southern Hemisphere is from June to August. Tasman Lake is in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, a glacial area on New Zealand’s South Island and about 470 miles southwest of Wellington.
