Man steals $1 million from grandma while she’s in nursing home, Indiana cops say
A South Carolina man was arrested after police say he stole roughly $1 million from his grandma while she was in an Indiana nursing home.
Eric Dyer, 54, of Batesburg is charged with theft, money laundering, corrupt business influence, neglect of a dependent and elder abuse, according to an Aug. 21 news release from Indiana State Police.
In May 2024, authorities began investigating Dyer after a financial institution reported “suspicious transactions” involving an Indiana woman.
Investigators learned Dyer was the woman’s grandson and had power of attorney over her, according to police.
The woman lived at an assisted living center at the time and Dyer was her legal guardian, police said.
Authorities discovered that from 2022 to 2024, Dyer withdrew nearly $1 million from the woman’s bank account, according to police. Dyer was using the money for his personal use and was behind on paying the woman’s assisted living facility monthly cost, police said.
Dyer was arrested Aug. 21 in Madison, which is about a 100-mile drive southeast from Indianapolis.
