Hiker dies in fall at 60-foot waterfall near popular Hawaii tourist destination, cops say
A 49-year-old man was killed in a hiking accident at a 60-foot waterfall in Hawaii, officials said.
Karl Newman was hiking Feb. 8 with acquaintances off the Hana Highway on the island of Maui “when he reportedly lost his footing and fell,” Maui Police Department said in a Feb. 9 news release.
Newman, from Waikapu in central Maui, had to be extracted using a helicopter “due to the location and height of the waterfall, which was estimated to be 60 feet,” police said.
He was dead when first responders reached him, according to police.
The Hana Highway is a famously scenic and twisty stretch of road that connects Kahului and Hana. It “has 620 curves and 59 bridges” and “leads you through flourishing rainforests, flowing waterfalls, plunging pools and dramatic seascapes,” according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
