Dog ‘blossomed’ after rough past — but still has mischievous streak. She needs a home

A puppy with a rough past “blossomed into a bubbly, happy dog” — and now, she needs a new home.

A Florida animal shelter said Roan has put her “rough start behind her… for the most part. Underneath that sweet, cuddly exterior is a puppy mischief mastermind who occasionally ‘forgets’ her adult dog manners. But hey, she tries!”

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Brevard shared Roan’s story on social media Oct. 2, about six months after she came to the shelter as a puppy. She had been through an “alleged cruelty case” and was transferred from a crowded Georgia shelter where she was “running out of time.”

“When I first arrived, I was just skin and bones, desperate for love and care,” the SPCA said in an online adoption profile written from Roan’s perspective. “But look at me now! I’m full of energy and always ready for a game of fetch.”

Roan, who briefly was adopted at one point, is described as a friendly mixed-breed dog with a love for cuddling. Then there are her quirks.

“Roan is just over 1 year old and absolutely adorable, but don’t be fooled by her puppy-dog eyes,” the shelter wrote in a Facebook post.

Roan is a “goofy” dog who can get “mouthy” at playtime, but she never hurts anyone. The shelter hopes to match her with a patient new owner and is offering training sessions to her next family at no cost.

“Because she missed out on some key socialization early on, Roan still has her fun puppy personality and quirks, even though she’s now about 1 year old,” Shelby Montgomery, public relations and community engagement coordinator for the SPCA, told McClatchy News in an email. “She gets along great with other dogs and people but would thrive in a home that can give her time and patience to learn adult dog manners.”

As of Oct. 3, Roan was still up for adoption as she worked on her behavior in a foster home. More details about the SPCA’s adoption process can be found at spcabrevard.com.

“While we don’t know everything she endured, Roan has blossomed into a bubbly, happy dog who is eager to please,” Montgomery wrote.

The shelter is in Titusville, a roughly 40-mile drive east from Orlando.
