Dad of 3 buys lottery ticket while Black Friday shopping — and wins big in Maryland
A dad of three stopped at a gas station and bought a $20 lottery ticket while Black Friday shopping in Maryland.
He then scored $500,000.
The construction worker from Lanham bought a Bonus Bingo X20 scratch-off in Hyattsville, the Maryland Lottery said in a Dec. 1 news release.
He went home and scratched the ticket. That’s when he realized he won, lottery officials said.
“I know how to win,” the man told lottery officials. “I play them a lot, and I am so familiar with them.”
Overwhelmed, he called his nephew and his nephew’s wife and asked if they would go with him to scan his ticket at a lottery retailer.
When they got there and confirmed he was a winner, “he just became so emotional,” his nephew’s wife told lottery officials.
“He couldn’t speak,” she said.
Now the lucky winner has plans to pay off some debt with his prize money. He also wants to invest some of it, he told lottery officials.
Hyattsville is about 30 miles southwest of Baltimore.
