Ducklings hatch near lazy river at SC waterpark. See how staff helped get them to lake
Ducklings hatched near a lazy river, sending a South Carolina waterpark scrambling to get them out, officials said.
The chicks reportedly made their debut on an island inside James Island County Park, home to the Splash Zone Waterpark and other activities in the Charleston area.
“We immediately cleared people out of the river and turned off the water flow,” Charleston County Parks wrote June 29 on Facebook.
Then it was time to figure out how to get the waterfowl family to a more appropriate body of water.
“After we consulted with our experts, the ducklings were guided into a bucket, and we ensured the mother duck could see her young throughout the process,” Charleston County officials wrote.
A photo posted online shows someone standing in the water at the park, holding a bucket while a duck stands nearby. After getting out of the lazy river area, the family made it to a lake.
“Our lifeguards truly have to be ready for anything,” park system wrote.
Mother ducks typically lead their babies to water within 24 hours of them hatching. During the hatching process, it’s best to have kids and pets stay away from the animals, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
