A swimmer died after rescuers pulled her from the ocean, according to Georgia fire officials.

Fire officials responded to a call for two swimmers in distress near jetties off of North Beach in Tybee Island just before 9 p.m. on June 26, according to a Facebook post from Tybee Island Fire Rescue.

Rescuers reported arriving to find one of the swimmers had already got back to shore.

Fire officials went out on jet skis to look for the second swimmer. After searching in low visibility and “non-ideal surf conditions,” rescuers found the swimmer and brought her back to shore, the post says.

She was unconscious and taken by ambulance to a hospital, according to a post on the City of Tybee Island’s Facebook page.

At 11 p.m. on June 26, the city announced she had died.

“Our hearts are with the families tonight as they grieve the loss of their loved one,” the post says.

No further information was immediately available.

Tybee Island is a barrier island about 20 miles east of Savannah.
