A 45-year-old man was arrested and faces charges in the killing of a 28-year-old man in Tucson, Arizona, police said.

A man’s dismembered remains were found in a vehicle and in the Arizona desert after he was reported missing, police said.

Antoine Smith, 28, was kidnapped from his apartment in Phoenix between the evening of Sept. 16 and the following morning, the Phoenix Police Department said in a news release.

His disappearance appears to be related to an owed debt, police said, and a man named John Cole, 45, emerged as a suspect.

Smith was reported missing on Sept. 19, after his loved ones attempted to contact Cole for information about Smith’s whereabouts, police said.

Police said they stopped and arrested Cole on his way to California and found some of Smith’s remains in his vehicle.

Cole also led police to more of Smith’s remains, which he left in a rural area south of Tucson, where Smith had been taken and killed, police said.

Cole told authorities he killed the man in self defense.

Cole is accused of kidnapping, killing and dismembering Smith. He was arrested on several felony charges, including first-degree murder, theft and kidnapping and booked into the Maricopa County Jail.
