An “extremely aggressive” bear wreaked havoc on an AirBnB in Northern California and charged at deputies who tried to remove it.

The bear got into the house in Truckee through an open window and proceeded to ransack it while looking for food, the California Highway Patrol said in a Facebook post. Deputies from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office responded to the break-in, but the bear charged at them several times, the post said.

The home was not empty when the bear broke in and the AirBnB’s guests locked themselves inside rooms “due to the aggressive nature of the bear,” the post said.

Offcers were eventually able to get the bear back outside, the post said. They discovered the bear had three cubs nearby waiting in a tree.

  • Speak calmly to identify yourself as a human

  • Pick up small children immediately

  • Hike and travel in groups

  • Try to make yourself look larger

  • Seal and store food properly; do not give food to bears

  • Do not run or climb trees to try and escape the bear
