Taco Bell has great news for Mexican Pizza fans. Here’s what to know
Taco Bell’s popular Mexican Pizza will become a permanent part of their menu later this year, the company said on its website.
The beloved menu item was reintroduced in May, but quickly sold out. Taco Bell said demand for the item was seven times higher than it was the last time it was offered.
The item was never meant to be limited edition, but shortages of the item were “unexpected,” and getting it back in stores is “taking longer than we’d like,” the company said.
The chain has already informed its employees about plans to bring it back so they can start preparing now, Taco Bell said on its website.
Taco Bell hopes to add the item back to menus this fall and the pizza’s cult-like fan base can keep checking the company’s website for updates.
The item will return with all of its original ingredients — “seasoned beef and refried beans between two fried flour tortillas, topped with pizza sauce, our 3 cheese blend and fresh diced tomatoes,” the company’s website said.
“As soon as we’re able to get the Mexican Pizza back in the hands and stomachs of our biggest fans, it’ll be for good,” the company said.
Taco Bell also said that customers who received a digital rewards offer for a free Mexican Pizza earlier this month will be able to redeem it once the item is reintroduced.
The Mexican Pizza was first pulled from Taco Bell’s menu in 2020 in an effort to make the chain’s offerings more environmentally friendly, McClatchy News reported.
Since then, fans of the fan favorite have made repeated calls for its return, including through a Change.org petition that garnered nearly 200,000 signatures, according to McClatchy News. When the company brought the item back this year, it promised that it would come in greener packaging.
The item is also beloved because it can easily be made into a tasty vegetarian dish, McClatchy News reported.
“Like many Indian-Americans who grew up vegetarian, we had limited access to the ‘fun’ fast food, so Taco Bell became a bridge to belonging in American culture for many kids like me who grew up in immigrant households,” said Krish Jagirdar, who started the Change.org petition.
The Mexican Pizza costs $4.49, according to Taco Bell’s website.
“If the last two years have taught us anything, it’s that literally nothing can emotionally take the place of the Mexican Pizza for some of our fans,” the company said.
