A mother and child drowned at a hotel swimming pool in Galveston, Texas, news outlets report.

Witnesses awoke to cries for help coming from the pool area at a Rodeway Inn after 1 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, Gladys Glenn told TV station KTRK. She rushed to help and found four people, a man and young boy, and a woman and little girl who were unresponsive.

As the man called for help, Glenn jumped into action, performing CPR on the girl, she told the outlet. It wasn’t enough to save her.

“I wish I could have done more. You know?” Glenn said. “I wanted to save her. I wish I could have.”

Busy trying to resuscitate the girl, Glenn didn’t notice her mother was still in the pool, KPRC reported.

“Had we known that, we would have got her. But we didn’t,” she told the TV station.

She tried CPR on the mother, too, but she remained unresponsive, the station reported.

First responders arrived around 1:30 a.m. and stayed at the scene for several hours, KHOU reported.

The mother and child were taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead, police told the outlet.
